Stroking Cattle, before…

In this oil painting (42×50 cm), I blend the boundaries between realism and expressionism to create a profound reflection on our relationship with animals. This work exemplifies my fusion of artistic styles and my commitment to social issues.

The composition, dominated by warm earth tones, depicts a woman in intimate connection with a cow. The deliberately unfinished sections of the dress, allowing the primed canvas to show through, are inspired by artists like Gustav Klimt. For me, they symbolize the imperfection of human perception, especially concerning our fellow creatures.

A particular technique I use here is the visible division into thirds on the cow’s head, resembling a subtle crosshair. This hints at the duality of the animal as both observer and potential victim. This ambiguity, reinforced by the title “Stroking Cattle, before…,” invites critical engagement with the ambivalence of our behavior towards animals.

My artistic vision is strongly influenced by my experiences in the Berlin squatters’ scene and my studies in social sciences. I see my art as a medium to stimulate socio-political discourse. I am inspired by socially critical artists like Otto Dix and the emotional intensity of Frida Kahlo.

A central element of my creative process is the innovative integration of AI. For this work, I used Midjourney for the initial image conception. This synthesis of traditional painting and digital innovation allows me to access an expanded “collective consciousness.” At the same time, I critically reflect on the limitations and biases of these technologies.

“Stroking Cattle, before…” is more than a depiction for me; it is an invitation to contemplate our relationship with nature and our ethical responsibilities. I want to challenge viewers to explore the deeper layers of our interactions with the world around us.

A personal anecdote: Before I decided to adopt a vegan diet, I had a dream of a white cow speaking to me. She conveyed the deep wisdom and empathy of her species. After that, it was natural for me to give up animal products. This experience has significantly influenced my artistic exploration of the human-animal relationship.

With “Stroking Cattle, before…,” I invite you to reflect on our complex relationship with animals and perhaps even question your own perspective.
