Urban Shaman – the magic of global change
“Urban Shaman” is an oil painting depicting an urban shaman in a powerful dance. She dances for a global change of power, a shift away from the exploitation of nature and people by neoliberal capitalism towards a world in which all living beings are equally respected.
The shaman I depict is a modern fence rider, a figure who walks between the visible and the invisible world, between our rational and explainable reality and the unconscious, the magical. She signifies the link between the ancient traditions of witches and shamans and the modern world of urban life.
In urban conglomerations, nature is domesticated, but even here, for example in a strong thunderstorm, in the rolling of thunder and the patter of rain, we can experience the originality and untamability of nature. The shaman in my painting is a reminder that we still have a connection to nature, even in the middle of the concrete jungles of the cities.
The shaman dances not only for a change of power, but also for an imagined future, inspired by the utopias in Marge Piercy’s novels “He, She and It” and “Women on the Edge of Time”. In this future, AI entities are not just tools, but equal partners who help us live sustainably and peacefully and share this wonderful planet and its resources.
“Urban Shaman” is an expression of my vision of a utopian future and my hope for a better world. It is a call to action, reflection and transformation. It is a testament to my belief that art has the power to change the world and create a better future.
I hope by immersing yourself in the “Urban Shaman” you’re inspired to reflect on your own role in shaping our collective future; and maybe the dancing shaman inspires you to dance for a global power shift yourself.
